Tell It Like It Is - Visit Monterey Hearld, a radio station, tv station or the deaf center for sign language. CUBS From Jainen - Santa Cruz Meet at the local library and use the microfiche to look up the newspaper for your birthday (Bear #8). Make handprints on the copy machines, check out old issues of Boys Life, get a library card (Wolf #6), find Mountain Charlie Road on a map of the Santa Cruz Mountains (Bear #4). Pick up background material for Webelos badges on forestry, geology or nature. Everyone knows about the history center at the Wilder Ranch, but do you know about the neat bike trail that goes there? Start from the very end of Mission Street in Santa Cruz, and follow an easy dirt trail for a mile or two. Have a picnic, do the climbing tree thing and come back. (Wolf #9, Bear #14, Webelos Readyman). From Shirley P220 Garland Park (Carmel Valley) is a great spot for Cubs. Call ahead and make arrangements for a ranger or docent to lead the Cubs on a tour of the park pointing out vegetation and wildlife. Have the Cubs look for and identify tracks and scat. If you’re lucky, maybe you can get the rangers to let you in for a private tour of their nature lodge. Elkhorn Slough (Moss Landing) is just as good. They have a great nature lodge that deals with the wildlife and the impact of people on nature. Call ahead to arrange for a docent led tour and WATCH FOR TICKS! Winner is the Cub that comes out with the most ticks!!! Hartnell College Swimming Pool (Homestead Ave., Salinas) is open for recreation swim in June and July. It is only $1.00 per Cub (cost may change). The pool and restrooms are clean and there are plenty of lifeguards. From Chris P38 Our Webelos Den went ice skating to Eastridge Ice Arena, 2190A Tully Rd., San Jose, CA 238-0440. Area was inside of a mall. Cost $5.50 entrance, skate rental $2.50 plus money for hot chocolate and maybe a Cinnabun in the Eastridge Mall afterwards. Hours open on Sunday 1:30 to 4:00. We arrived about 2:00 and skated until 3:30 or so and that was plenty of experience. Some kids hadn’t skated before, some would not skae! One parent brought along a 2-year old daughter who went around a few times. I think any age can participae, but the younger the age, the more parents, of course. We had three cars, three parents. A great experience for those who have never or rarely skated. Pack 38 Monterey - ICE SKATING Our Webelos Den went ice skating. We went to Eastridge Ice Arena, 2190 A Tully Rd., San Jose 238-0440. A great experience for those who had never or rarely skated. BOY SCOUTS From Jainen - Santa Cruz The Pacific Edge is an incredible opportunity - one of the largest indoor gyms in the world. There is a cost, but this is one of our most favorite Boy Scout Outings. 104 Bronson St., Santa Cruz, 454-9554. NOTE: Professional trainers very carefully control and manage activity in this simulated environment. Still, rock climbing is not an allowed acvitity for scouts under the age of 14. Younger boys can participate only as a family activity. From Shirley T-44 Whitewater rafting on the American River is great! We go to Gold Rush River Runners, P.O. Box 1070, Lotus, CA 95651. The campgrounds were grassy and flat, the showers were very clean and warm. Most of all, their guides were great! They were very knowledgeable, friendly and two of them were Eagle Scouts! The Eagles joined our campfire, which they helped us build, and even participated in our campfire program! River was great - not to scary for the beginners, but enough to hold the interest of those Scouts who’ve been a time or two. Ski Trip to Dodge Ridge. Dodge Ridge gives discounts to Boy Scout troops. They were very accommodating. All the Scouts got exactly what they wanted. The beginners got their lessons, some opted for snow boarding lessons and yet others already knew how to ski and chose to hit the slopes. FOR ALL AGES From Mike P-618 Day Hikes at Rancho Del Oso (North of Davenport on Hwy 1) & Nisene Marks State Park: Aptos. Both spots have the two basic ingredients for a good hike for boys: trees and creeks. Both heavily loaded with diverse trails both long and short. From Steve P-285 Fort Hunter Ligget on a weekend in the spring or fall when cooler and when the military is not using the base for exercises. Lots of activities - great pool, Indian caves, rifle range (you need to supervise yourself), rope courses, confidence courses (obstacles), cheap movie theater, bowling alley. We use this as a joint outing with our related Webelos dens. Lots of parents, family invited. Adults cook - intended just for fun. Kids love it!
